Recurring Blocked
Drainage Reconfiguration

A Recurring Blocked Drain

The Problem

The property was experiencing recurring drainage blockages caused by poor pipe layout. Multiple unnecessary bends, combined with 6-inch-to-4-inch pipe reducers, were creating snagging points that restricted flow and made effective drain clearing difficult.

The Assessment

Our team carried out a full inspection, which included:

- CCTV surveying of the drainage system

- Dye testing of laterals and pipe connections

- Taking detailed measurements of chamber size and depths

- Producing a detailed report identifying faults and restrictions

The Solution

To permanently resolve the issue, we removed the restrictive 4-inch pipework and replaced
it with correctly graded 6-inch pipework. This eliminated reducers, reduced sharp bends,
and significantly improved flow and maintenance access.

Key Steps

1. Carefully remove the wall and support the existing inspection chamber.

2. Identifying an existing timber heading within the structure.

3. Supporting and treating the timber heading, which was found to be deteriorating due to age.

4. Excavating and exposing the drainage run to record all faults and snagging points.

5. Replacing a 90-degree bend with two 45-degree bends to improve flow and allow easier cleaning access beyond the timber heading.

6. Installing new pipework and ensuring there were no remaining snagging points.

7. Repacking around the timber heading and reinstating the wall

The Result

The upgraded drainage run was fully tested and confirmed to be free-flowing, with no
snagging points or restrictions.

The works successfully eliminated recurring blockages. The drainage system now flows
efficiently and allows easy access for future maintenance, with no further issues reported.
