Sewage Lifting Unit (Flip Pump) Installation

The Problem
The property was experiencing recurring flooding caused by sewer backflow. Flooding was occurring through an internal manhole located within a cupboard, as well as backflow through toilets, sinks, and a gully at the property entrance.
Client
Water Board
Property Type:
Residential House
Location:
Shepherd’s Bush, London
The Assessment
Our team carried out a full inspection, which included:
- CCTV surveying of the drainage system
- Dye testing of laterals and pipe connections
- Taking precise measurements to ensure the lifting station would fit within the available space
- Sonde tracing and marking the route of the drain from the property to the main sewer
- Producing a detailed report identifying faults, restrictions, and installation constraints

The Solution
Due to the main sewer being located only one metre from the rear cupboard wall, and with no viable option for carriageway excavation, we designed a solution involving the installation of a new sewage lifting station within the cupboard area located just outside the basement entrance.
This required breaking out the existing manhole chamber walls and floor, excavating to the required depth, forming a new base slab, shuttering new walls, and installing a Jung Compli 1010 sewage lifting unit. A double access cover was installed to allow safe and convenient future maintenance.
Key Steps
1. CAT scanning the area, followed by breaking out the existing chamber walls, channels, and floor.
2. Excavating to the correct depth and forming a new concrete base and sump pit.
3. Shuttering & concreting the new chamber walls.
4. Installing the Jung Compli 1010 lifting unit, sump, and associated pipework.
5. Installing the electrical supply, Techno cover, and access steps, followed by full reinstatement and site clearance.

The Result
The upgraded pump system and associated pipework were fully tested and commissioned
to confirm correct operation and reliable performance.
The installation was completed successfully with no issues reported. Locating the lifting
station within the cupboard avoided the need for carriageway excavation, resulting in
significant cost savings while providing excellent access for future maintenance and
servicing.
